Research Projects: Leadership

Completed: Developing Effective Military Leaders: Facilitating the Acquisition of Experience-Based, Tacit Knowledge

Principal Investigator: R. J. Sternberg
Project Director: Cynthia Matthew

Description: Can people improve their ability to acquire tacit knowledge? Because tacit knowledge is knowledge that usually is not verbalized and that people are often unaware they even have, teaching people how to acquire tacit knowledge is not a trivial task. In this project, we are investigating the efficacy of alternative methods for improving the cognitive processes involved in practical problem solving and learning from experience. In particular, we will evaluate the use of metacognitive and reflective techniques in brief interventions designed to enhance the tacit knowledge of military leaders.
